Sealing Heating Ducts

If you have high utility bills or you  feel drafts, or some rooms are just not as comfortable... sealing the ducts could be the answer.

In summer the ducts leak cold air and winter they leak  hot air.

The Federal Energy Star program says the average home will leak around 1/3 of the heated or cooled air that is generated.

Leaking ducts make it difficult  to heat and cool rooms, making some areas stuffy, and uncomfortable.

Often the ductwork located in a basement, garagecrawlspace or attic has never been sealed and insulated.

A1 square inch leak in the duct can be equal to 20 square inches in a wall.

Here's a Checklist:

Improvements  you should make to your duct system.

  • Use diagnostic equipment to measure and locate leaks.
  • Damaged, poorly connected or improperly sized ducts should be repaired or replaced .
  • Tangled or crushed flex duct should be straightened out.
  • Use UL181 mastic to seal connections, joints and seams.
  • Grills, registers and vents should be tightly sealed.
  • Attics and crawl spaces are unconditioned areas. Ducts there should be insulated up to code.
  • Any system upgrades should include a new furnace filter.
  • An airflow test should be performed after sealing your ducts.
  • A Combustion Safety Test will ensure gas or oil-burning appliances are not back drafting.
